Granite Is In! - Tuesday, March 06, 2007

It has been a couple weeks since we last posted any news. Not a lot has happened in that time. We were waiting for the granite countertops to come in. But they are now in so things should be finishing up soon.

Since our last update Sarah and I visited a few granite warehouses testing out whether we could afford granite or not. We found a granite that we liked and got some estimate from a couple granite installers. We also looked at engineered solid surface, granite tile and laminate. After looking at our budget and weighing the look that we like, we finally decided on granite. When we ordered the granite we had a couple of weeks before it would be ready to install.

Our next little project was to paint the dining room. We decided on a very light shade of the color that is in our kitchen. Since we moved to working in the dining room, we decided to remove the popcorn texture on our dining room ceiling. It is the only room in the house that has a textured ceiling. Taking down the texture ceiling was surprisingly easy. However it left a major mess that still isn't completely cleaned up. After looking at the newly painted ceiling and walls, we are happy with the decision.

Next we decided to replace the baseboards in the kitchen and dining room. Sarah spent the last week staining and putting polyurethane on new baseboards. The base shoe around the cabinets are maple and the rest of the kitchen and dining room is pine.

The schedule with getting the granite countertops in got really interesting at the end. Two weeks ago the granite installer set up the install date for March 9. They also knew that the countertops were the last big thing we were waiting on, so they were going to try to get the install earlier if they could. That left us two weeks to find and install corbels for the bar area to support the bar granite countertop. Sarah and I found some corbels that we liked online. They should be able to get them to us by the time the countertops were ready. Well last Friday I still hadn't heard from the online store whether the corbels had shipped. I was starting to get worried whether we'd get them in time or not. The phone number for the online store went straight to their answering machine and the only other way to contact them was through their online form. So Monday morning I fill out their form asking about if the corbels had shipped and if I needed to pay expedited shipping to make sure they arrived by Friday. Now noon on Monday I hear from the countertop installer that they have they can install the countertops earlier if I want. I have to decline because I still don't have any idea when the corbels are going to arrive. An hour after I get off the phone with the countertop installers I hear from the corbel online store that not only did they ship already, be they were being delivered to my house that very day. Augh! So I call the countertop installer back and see if they can still work me in. Well the good news is that they can.

So here we are on Tuesday with the countertops in (but not glued... that's tomorrow), the baseboards are almost complete. The only only major pieces left are the sink plumbing, garbage disposal, dishwasher, and stove. Then we finish up with touch up paint.

Whew! Well, I think that is enough for tonight. I'll get back with some more pictures of the sink and stove. Plus all the fun details about cleaning up the mess!
