Bottom Cabinets Installed - Thursday, February 01, 2007

Today the bottom cabinets were installed.  The kitchen is starting to take shape and you can see how it all will work together.  A few of the cabinets need to be moved/shimmed still, but everything is basically together.  Ryan and I stood in the kitchen tonight admiring the cabinets.  We are really pleased with their overall look, and they'll be even better with hardware.  We were surprised to see a built-in cutting board in the area between the stove and the fridge, but we figure it is one of those things we threw in at the beginning of the design process and forgot about.  We prefer to use plastic cutting boards for food safety, so the wood board will probably stay tucked away most of the time.

Tonight we will be remeasuring the space to finalize our flooring order.  We hope to be able to prime the walls this weekend.  Of course, if you've been following our saga, we've been saying that for over a week.  Today we visited Cold Springs granite and looked at some beautiful slabs.  Ryan called some countertop installers to find out how much for solid granite.  We're pretty sure it is way out of our budget, but it is nice to be informed....

On a side note, I've been making us do a Kepnor-Tregoe Decision Analysis for every big decision (like the purchase of the appliances and flooring so far).  (My Seagate friends are probably groaning now (and pity Ryan) since they hate doing KTDAs with me at work).  It really has helped us narrow down the exact features we need vs want and make a decision based on data, reality and facts rather than cost, aesthetics and dreams.  It forces us to do a lot of comparison shopping and data gathering, so we've been fortunate to find some good deals along the way, while still allowing us to get what we want.  My 'realistic' budget is about $5K over what I'd like to spend on this kitchen, so we've been shaving off little bits here and there.  Barring a large overage (like a solid granite countertop) or unforseen disaster, I think we can get to within a thousand of our original budget.  Hopefully....or I'll have to sell some more Seagate shares.
